AN ELECTION LIKE
NO OTHER |
|
With the most important election of our lifetime less than
one week away, I felt compelled to offer my thoughts, because that's what
columnists get to do. For those that I offend, I suggest they write their
own column. I'll promise to read it.
This column will not be a discussion of the issues. While I
have strong opinions about health care, taxes, abortion, climate change,
trade wars, foreign policy and other topics, they actually take a back
seat to what I consider the most important element of this
election---character.
Donald Trump is an evil, miserable human being who has no
business being the leader of our country. He is a shrill, trash talking
reality show host who cares about nothing except his narcissistic self.
I know many friends and acquaintances who are voting for
Trump. Almost all of them admit he is a seriously flawed human being, but
his political views that they share outweigh the negative aspects of his
personality.
I say no, they do not.
Find another candidate in four years. Someone like John Kasich, or
Mitt Romney, or Jeb Bush---someone who will share your views but will not
tear the country apart in the meantime. Someone who will restore the
dignity of the office of the Presidency, and restore the dignity of our
great country throughout the world.
Donald Trump is a horrible person. He is everything you teach
your children not to be. He is a rude bully with no social grace, no sense
of civility, no compassion. He is a leader who only leads himself. He has
no place in our lives.
The only thing he inspires is hate, and he seems to revel in
it. I try not to hate anyone, but I hate Donald Trump. I never hated
George Bush, or his father, or Ronald Reagan, or even Richard Nixon. I
didn't always agree with them, but I never hated them.
Donald Trump has pushed me and so many others over the edge,
and what's particularly irritating is that he seems to make a conscious
effort to do so. And it stems primarily not from his policies, but from
his personality. That's the last thing we need from a leader.
I was still writing a weekly column for The Chronicle when
Trump was elected in 2016. While I was no fan of the new President, I
wrote a column urging Trump haters to give him a chance. The people had
spoken (well, the electoral college had spoken) and it was time for the
other side to see what they could do.
I took a lot of heat for that column, but I stand by it.
We've seen what Trump can do for the last four years, and he's basically
torn the country apart. It's time to clean up his mess.
Now I want to use the same argument for those who are
expected to vote for Trump. If Biden wins, let him show what he can do.
Yes, it might cost you some money in taxes. Yes, he'll make some policy
mistakes. But that seems like a small price to pay for the chance of
unifying the country and restoring dignity to the office of the President
of the United States.
With Donald Trump, we have no chance. He will continue to
divide us, because that's what he likes to do. That's in his DNA. His
philosophy is to energize his base, and screw everyone else. That's not a
leader, that's a dictator.
If Biden wins and things don't go well over the next four
years, nominate someone that is a good, solid citizen of the world.
Nominate someone who doesn't alienate his opponents because of his
personality. Nominate someone who doesn't inspire hate.
I can handle that. What I can't handle is another four years
of Donald Trump.
